Arroyo cites Pope's encyclical in State Of the Nation Address

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo cited Deus Caritas Est (Latin for "God is Love"), the first encyclical letter written by Pope Benedict XVI, on the subject of Christian love, in her State of the Nation Address.

Mrs Arroyo cited the encyclical in the context of her administration's national welfare programme.

The President said her administration has launched a national welfare program to help people find jobs, increase pension, bring cheaper medicine to the people, among others.

The encyclical's message reflects on the concepts of eros (possessive, often sexual, love), agape (unconditional, self-sacrificing love), logos (the word), and their relationship with the teachings of Jesus.

The encyclical was promulgated on Jan. 25, 2006.
