Bishop Murray to get 'modest pension' deal

ON his first day as the former Bishop of Limerick, Donal Murray and senior figures in the diocese were drawing up his remuneration and pension package.

He will not be homeless or short of food and pocket-money. Bishop Murray has stepped-down some six years ahead of the normal retirement age of 75.

Last night church sources said that the Limerick diocese would offer Bishop Murray "a modest pension".

These sources said it was likely that Bishop Murray would have an annual pension of between €20,000 to €30,000.

But as an academic theologian, Bishop Murray could earn private income from articles, lectures and the publication of books.

It may be that he will be given a diocesan car or be given financial assistance towards a private car.

Bishop Murray now enjoys the titular rank of Emeritus Bishop, and will retain the prestige that confers on him.
