Church must rebuild itself, says Martin

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin yesterday said he had "no difficulty" with investigations being carried out in other dioceses -- but said that it was up to the Government.

He said in the meantime they would concentrate on rebuilding the Church "so we can go forward with a Church that is confident in itself and has the confidence of its people."

He added: "I think for me some of the problems that are emerging in this report deal with the climate in the Church," he said.

"In addition to working very hard on the question of child protection, I've been also very clear in talking about renewing evangelisation, renewing communities, getting more lay people involved in parishes."

Archbishop Martin said "terrible mistakes" had been made but that things were now "very different" to how they had been.
