Survivor of abuse calls for bishops to step down

OUTSPOKEN abuse campaigner Christine Buckley has joined critics who are demanding the resignation of Catholic bishops who covered up the clerical sex abuse of children.

The founder of the Aislinn Centre in Dublin was voted the European Volunteer of the Year at the European Parliament for her work highlighting the institutional abuse of children over the past 25 years.

Speaking after she was presented with the gold trophy at a ceremony in Strasbourg yesterday, Ms Buckley said the bishops have no choice but to resign.

She also warned that church-goers and volunteers working on behalf of the church and its leading charities could leave the church if the religious hierarchy does nothing to atone for its sins.
