Bishops in call over mass boycott plans

The Catholic Bishops have urged people not to stay away from mass this weekend.

Their appeal follows a call by Jennifer Sleeman for a one-off boycott to protest at what she terms the treatment of women as second class citizens in the Church.

Ms Sleeman has also asked those who prefer to attend mass to wear a green armband in support of the ordination of women.

In a statement issued to RTÉ News, the Bishops said that the involvement of lay women and men in all aspects of Church life had increased significantly in recent years, and that the celebration of mass was essential to the practice of the Catholic faith.
