Nearly half say Brady should quit

ALMOST half of people believe the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, should deliver his resignation to Rome, according to an opinion poll.

The 71-year-old Archbishop faced criticism earlier this year amid revelations over his role in the cover-up of the paedophile monk Brendan Smyth.

Last month, he told the Irish Independent that he would not be resigning his post.

But around 45pc of respondents believe he should relinquish his role, according to the results of the TV3/Millward Brown national opinion poll.

Opinions were divided, however, with 31pc saying they felt he should remain in the job.

Around a quarter of the 1,000 people who were quizzed last week were undecided.
