Census results reveal 86% of Louth is Catholic

The latest Census results from the Central Statistics Office show that 86.9 per cent of County Louth population is Catholic.

The largest single religion in County Louth was Catholicism with a total of 106,845 persons, the largest number of Catholics in the county since records began. 

In total 86.9 per cent of the total population was Catholic, an increase of 7.2 per cent since 2006.

This compared with an increase of 4.9 per cent to 84.2 per cent of the population for the State as a whole.

The total of those with no religion, atheists and agnostics increased more than five-fold between 1991 and 2011 to stand at 5,414 or 4.4 per cent of the population of the county in 2011.

There were 2,179 members of the Church of Ireland in County Louth accounting for 1.8 per cent of the population in the county in April 2011.
